Introduction

The Atoll Institute is seeking to obtain, inside the United States government or privately, a decommissioned U.S. Army 1466 or U.S. Navy 1600 Class utility landing craft (LCU), and is also planning for the day when a U.S. Army LCU 2000 Class is decommissioned and available.  In this regard, the Atoll Institute is in communication with the government to try to track down and obtain donation of an LCU 1466 or 1600 Class vessel.   Also, the Atoll Institute was invited to tour U.S. Army 491st Transportation Company base at Mare Island, California, home to a fleet of LCU 2000s, so on or about July 23, 2008, the directors and some patrons will tour it.
