Introduction to the
Baurua Outrigger Expedition

The Baurua Outrigger Expedition had its origins as a concept that was developed by  Empyrean International in 1985 to sail a baurua outrigger from the capitol of the Republic of Kiribati to Vancouver, Canada and The 1986 World Exposition in conjunction with creation of a proposed Pacific Islands Pavilion, which eventually became the South Pacific Pavilion.  Accordingly, the display of a baurua outrigger was officially sponsored as a part of the International Marine Habour at Expo 86.  This story is told in the link at the left margin.

The president of Empyrean International and the Atoll Institute, Mr. Robert Grosz, therefore went to Tarawa, the capitol of Kiribati, to secure a baurua outrigger for display in the International Marine Harbour at Expo 86 .  This story is told in the link at the left margin, and the webpage contains documents that detail the construction of a baurua outrigger, its navigation, and the overall goals of the expedition circa 1986, but which remain valid today.

The Baurua Outrigger Expedition did not commence in 1986, but it is intended that when it finally does commence in a few years the planned departure point should be the beach that fronts the national House of Assembly at Tarawa, which is shown below.
