Tabuaeran (Fanning) Atoll, Northern Line Islands Chain, Republic of Kiribati |

The coral atolls of the Equatorial Central Pacific are being submerged due to sea level rise caused by global warming, principally the result of the burning of fossil fuels. The Atoll Institute is therefore dedicated to assisting the atoll islanders adapt to sea level rise by reclaiming those atolls that are suitable for reclamation, and has a specific goal of reclaiming one dozen of the 62 inhabited atolls in the region and thereby accommodate all of the islanders. To accomplish this goal we are now planning to launch the “Tungaru Expedition” which will be a one-year circumnavigation of the region and the production of a television documentary series and large format film, all in 3D. The productions will introduce the atoll islanders to the world, recount their histories, document their cultures, capture their struggles with sea level rise, and identify the atolls suitable for reclamation as part of a Hollywood based initiative called “ATOLL AID.” Immediately following the Tungaru Expedition will be initiation of an Atoll Reclamation Pilot Project on Tabuaeran (Fanning) Atoll, located 1,000 miles south of Hawaii, as seen in the photograph above. However it is depletion of the very fossil fuels that are the principal cause of sea level rise which present the gravest threat to the islanders, and humanity. Official and reliable estimates of world oil consumption and reserves make clear that long before the atolls are submerged the world economy, as we know it, will cease to exist. Even before these oil reserves are exhausted the winding down of the world economy, and resulting conflicts between peoples and nations, will inevitably result in famine and depopulation. Therefore a major goal of the Atoll Reclamation Pilot Project will be demonstration of the sustainable technologies employed and how to implement them throughout the world. Accordingly, you are cordially invited to participate in the Tungaru Expedition, and more! ü CLICK to read the SEAFRAME report (December 2010) on sea level rise in the Pacific (1.9 mb).ü CLICK to watch the U.N.
