BREAKING NEWS ON JULY 3/08
180' Maritime Research Ship donated to the Atoll Institute
and soon to be renamed the R/V Martin Vitousek.

SEA LEVEL RISE CAUSED BY GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE
IS NOW OVER 6 mm (1/4") PER YEAR IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN,
SO SOON ITS LOW-LYING CORAL ATOLLS WILL BE SUBMERGED.

BUT ATOLLS WITH LAGOONS MAY BE SAVED WITH SUSTAINABLE DREDGING OF LAGOON DEPOSITS AND FILLING ONTO THE ISLETS.

So please help save and enjoy the inhabitable atolls while possible.

Nabari Islet road heading south from the Cable Station on Tabuaeran (Fanning) Atoll (Dec 3/06).

This lagoon road, which is roughly 1 foot in elevation and typical of perhaps
75% of the dry land, will be under water in less than 50 years at the present
sea level rise of over 1/4" (6.6 mm) per year, with the attendant loss of its
habitat for the islanders, flora and fauna, unless a pilot sustainable dredging
program is implemented soon, and without undue environmental impacts.
