GOVERNOR
Dr. James R. Hein, PhD
Dr. James R. Hein, of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), is a Marine Geologist, Geochemist, and Economic Geologist in Coastal and Marine Geology. In 1969, he earned a BA in Geology from Oregon State University, and in 1973 he earned a PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of California at Santa Cruz. Dr. Hein joined the USGS in 1974, and two years later started working on marine mineral deposits. Since then, he has made significant contributions to the study of ferromanganese crusts and nodules, phosphorites, hydrothermal manganese, hydrothermal sulfides and sulfates, and barite deposits. Those efforts evolved into studies of a variety of deposit types that occur as potential analogs in the geologic record. Recently, he has been involved in studies of hydrothermal deposits that occur at oceanic fracture zones, island arcs, and spreading centers. He has authored or co-authored over 340 papers and abstracts, is a Fellow of both the Society of Economic Geologists and the Geological Society of America, and was President of the International Marine Minerals Society. The Atoll Institute is very proud
to have Dr. Hein as a Governor, and we expect him to
provide excellent advise and direction as
regards assessing deep seabed resources within the
territorial and adjacent waters of the Pacific atoll
nations.
